What we do: the club books seats and arranges coach transport for members and guests to attend plays and concerts, starting from Kingsbridge in Devon. The planned events are listed in programmes issued about four times a year. The venues are mainly in Plymouth, Torbay and Exeter but we occasionally travel much further afield. See more at About Us.

NEWSLETTER 2, April 2018  (posted 29 March 2018)
Dear SHTCC Member/s,

I have a lot to cover in this newsletter but please note the first paragraph regarding our latest programme enclosed which has three shows with deadlines later this month. Please book NOW if you wish to go to:
* Agatha Christie’s ‘Love from a Stranger’ at the Lyric, TRP – deadline 27th April
* Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Iolanthe’ at the Northcott - deadline 27th April
* National Theatre's War Horse at the Lyric, TRP - deadline 27th April

We are giving the second visit of ‘War Horse’ to Plymouth a second chance in case there are any who missed it before or would like to go a second time but please note the last chance to book is the 27th April! We are also giving RSC’s highly acclaimed ‘Matilda’ a second chance too since it’s coming to Plymouth this time - it’s booked but not on this programme since we have more time before the deadline.

The club’s AGM was held on Wednesday 14th March at Charleton Village Hall. The meeting was only just quorate when the proxy votes were taken into account. It was agreed that a resolution amending the constitution to 15 rather than 20 members making a quorum be put forward at next year’s AGM and that other venues in Kingsbridge with parking should be explored. Since the meeting we have booked the Methodist Hall in Kingsbridge for Tuesday 12th March 2019 from 10.30 – 12.30.  Brenda Loosemore will once again entertain us so we will be expecting a much bigger turnout.

A special mention was made of Dick Lloyd who has decided to leave the club because of ill health. The club acknowledged the work Dick did in rescuing the club back in 2008 and helping me on the committee initially to reform the club. Dick was always on call to be coach host when he attended productions. He has also been the independent examiner of our accounts for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. We would have presented Dick with a gift to show the club’s appreciation, but he was unable to attend the AGM. We tracked him down at the Theatre Royal the week after and he was presented with a thank you card and a book token for £50.
It’s a special year for the club in that we are celebrating being in existence for 70 years!  The club’s long history makes a fascinating story and the committee is working on how best to use this to promote the club during 2018. Jenny Arnold has spoken to the Gazette about a special feature covering this.

We have decided to help subsidise some shows which need assistance to make club trips viable (we lose members when we cancel trips because of poor levels of response!) and also to spend more money on marketing the club. Actions include advertising, website and social media. The committee is busy working on various actions in the coming months and we hope our efforts will be obvious!  A poster is already in place at the Kingsbridge Information Centre.

In looking at how other theatregoer clubs do things I wondered whether the idea of day trips would appeal to our members. The ideas would be to embrace an area including Truro, Bath and Bristol where we could go for the day, having lunch and attend a matinee show. This could be on a Saturday (encourage members who work?) or whatever day matinees are held at the theatre of interest (e.g. Thursday in Plymouth). Email with your ideas.

Minutes of the 2018 AGM are posted here on the Management section of the About Us page.

You are possibly aware that The General Data Protection Regulation is a new, European-wide law that replaces the Data Protection Act 1998 in the UK. It places greater obligations on how organisations handle personal data. It comes into effect on 25 May 2018. I am working on how it affects you and SHTCC. Any club member who can help me with this work will be most welcome.

  Best wishes,

Nick Alen
